Nayarit Soul: Rest, Yoga and Somatic Movement
Mar de Jade holds a special place in my heart, having served over ten thousand people while working there for the last decade. It has been a place that marries both my ancient and youthful soul, working both as a healer and yoga teacher for over 20 years, the jungle deepens the work and the ocean returns our hearts to joy and innocence. This retreat center has become known for its "magic," magic I credit with the creation of space for the purpose of taking care and extending gifts to all who would travel and stay here. If it feels like home and everyone like family, it is because for most of the staff this is actually true. The hearts of the people who will take care of you this week are big enough to extend their homes and hearts to those who come in search of respite and belonging. For that reason, I am honored to be a part of your week here at my home away from home.
Wellness Week is designed to be both spacious and nutritive. Last year, the focus was on deepening into ritual, community, and culture. This year we will dive into the body and allow it to find the rest it so desperately needs in our fast paced world.
Classes and sessions will focus on resetting the nervous system through restorative practices including breath, yoga Nidra, and hypnogogic/meditative relaxation. These will be a part of most classes to some extent and a deeper relaxation utilizing these practices will be offered in the evening mid-week. Every morning we will practice hatha (static postures)+ flow (vinyasa) yoga merged with mobility exercises; my style, as a result of over 20 years of teaching, is focused on full extension, mindfulness, body mechanics, and breath, beginners and experts are invited and welcome. Twice during the week in the evening we will have optional somatic movement free flow classes.
Somatics is the practice of focusing our awareness to perceive the body's natural instincts and impulses. It is a way of allowing the body to be our teacher and guide. Rather than moving from our heads, we allow the body to communicate through listening. As such, we enter into the silent stillness in order to find organic movements and open where we have closed, remember what we have forgotten, and soften what has hardened. It is non-performative, without steps or structure, and calls upon the body's vast intelligence to create inner connection, healing, and movement. These cues will flow through yogic practices and be spotlighted on our two nights of free flow.
We will complete the week with a Temazcal. This is optional, gentle and a family style sweat lodge. All the elements will be present and it is an opportunity for people to connect past and future with our present place and time in the beautiful Nayarit.
